Nasira’s Story

Rebuilding Life After War

Nasira fled Syria after war to find refuge in Canada. She was a doting mother and wife, living life peacefully before the war. But when the war broke out, she found herself in continuous hardship.

She escaped Syria to find refuge in Turkey, but things got harder from here. When the earthquake hit Turkey, Nasira lost her home, her husband and her sons. The grief was unbearable.

Alone and stranded, she came to Canada to rebuild her life at the age of 66. With some government support to tide her over, Nasira began renting a room in a basement. But when her payment was delayed, she was evicted and homeless once again.

A friend introduced her to National Zakat Foundation and because of your support, we were able to provide her with a lifeline that brought her much-needed relief and support.

Recognizing the urgency of Nasira's situation, we were able to provide her with rental support, food and other critical needs.

There are approximately 7.6 million people aged 65 and over living in Canada. Many of them rent. (CBC) When circumstances change, like a rent increase or renoviction, older adults are less likely to be able to weather significant financial shocks because they're on a fixed income.

Today, Nasira has a stable place to live and access to food. Nasira’s story is a testament to the power of local giving and the impact it can have on individuals facing immense hardship. Her resilience and determination, coupled with your support have given her a chance to rebuild her life.

When you give Zakat for Her, you become the hope for many women going through similar situations.
