A Story of Triumph After Domestic Violence
Khadija, a Canadian Egyptian, has called Canada home for over 15 years. A survivor of domestic abuse and a mother of two sons—both relying on welfare support—her life was already full of challenges. But when she found herself trapped in a lease under her ex-husband’s name, with no support from him, her situation became dire. Her welfare caseworker advised her not to leave her home, yet eviction was looming. She reached out to the city of Ottawa for help, only to be told that assistance would only come after she had already lost her home.
Then, tragedy struck.
A workplace accident left Khadija with a broken leg and a severe back injury, forcing her onto sick leave. Now, she was not only facing eviction but also unable to work—bedridden, vulnerable, and desperate to provide for her children.
But Khadija refused to give up. She turned to her local mosque for help, and that decision changed everything. The mosque reached out to National Zakat Foundation, and our team immediately stepped in.
With your Zakat, we were able to provide Khadija with urgent food support, ensuring that she and her children had meals during this critical time. And though she ultimately lost her home, your generosity helped us advocate for her. She was placed in temporary housing along with her sons, giving them a safe place to stay.
Khadija’s journey is one of resilience. Despite hardship after hardship, she never lost hope. And with the support of NZF—and people like you—she found the stability she needed to focus on healing and rebuilding her life.
This is the power of Zakat.
There are countless women like Khadija in need of a helping hand. You can be the difference between despair and hope. Donate to Zakat for Her today and help women find their way to stability.
Because no mother should have to fight alone.
