Zakat Assistance Program

Zakat Assistance Program

NZF’s distribution program is the core mechanism through which we bring the pillar of Zakat to life. This program puts our donor’s funds into action in impactful ways to change the lives of needy families across Canada.

Zakat & Casework Program

Zakat & Casework Program

Despite government support and programs in place, the need for local Zakat is real and cannot be ignored. Thousands of families living in Canada face real challenges related to poverty. Among these are low-income individuals, those with disabilities, the elderly, refugees and newcomers in resettlement, single parents, new Muslims, and the homeless.

Our core Zakat program brings direct Zakat funding to those in need across Canada. Through adherence to the Prophetic tradition and careful financial assessment, our team of caseworkers ensure that every dollar of Zakat distributed goes to those who are eligible to receive it.

Beyond Zakat, there are those who need further support getting their lives in order. For this purpose, the NZF caseworker team is trained and dedicated to providing resettlement support, resource navigation, and financial coaching.

FAQs

Answering Your Questions

Here you will find answers to some of the most frequently asked questions about our organization and its work. We hope that this page will help you learn more about us and how we can help you or your community.
Learn about Zakat
What is the length of assistance for Zakat recipients?

NZF provides assistance for a short period of time (2-4 months generally). However, our team of caseworkers are equipped with the knowledge of government benefits and community resources, which are key in providing a more holistic service, with an aim toward self-sustainability.

How long do recipients have to wait to get assistance?

Most applications are processed within 2 to 10 days from the submission of all supporting materials required depending on the volume of application we are dealing with at that specific time. For urgent cases, we process cases much sooner depending on the circumstances. Read more here.

Does National Zakat Foundation only assist Muslims?

We follow the legal guidelines of Zakat as a restricted fund to assist Muslims in need. However, we do receive applications from those, not of the Islamic faith and provide whatever assistance we can from non-Zakat funds as well as by connecting them to other resources available in the community. Read more here.

Does National Zakat Foundation pay student loans with Zakat?

NZF does not cover student loans and other long-term debts with Zakat. At this time, our priority is to focus on serving the most immediate needs of our community with respect to housing, food and other basic essentials.

Does National Zakat Foundation provide direct support with cash?

NZF funds clients in a manner that the organization sees fit and aligned with the needs highlighted in the Zakat application. Under current CRA regulations, NZF does not provide cash directly to Zakat applicants.
