4 Hadith on Winter: A Season for Worship and Charity

Winter: A Season for Worship and Charity

Cold nights and harsh conditions make winter a challenging time. However, for Muslims, winter is a season filled with unique opportunities for worship and charity.

As scholars and hadith highlight, this time of year provides moments to draw closer to Allah through devotion and acts of kindness.

Let’s explore some of the key sayings from the Prophet ﷺ about winter and how we can take these lessons to heart by offering support to those in need through winter charity.

4 Hadith on Winter

  1. The Importance of Keeping Warm in Worship

Thawban (RA) reported:

“Allah’s Messenger ﷺ dispatched an expedition. They experienced extremely cold weather, so when they returned, Allah’s Messenger ﷺ commanded them to wipe over their turbans and leather socks.” (Abu Dawud)

Islam promotes warmth in worship, guiding us to care for our attire in the cold.

  1. Adaptations in Prayer During Winter

 Waʾil ibn Ḥujur (RA) said:

“I came to the Prophet ﷺ during winter, and I saw his Companions raising their hands under their clothes during the prayer.” (Aḥmad)

The extreme cold caused the Companions to raise their hands in prayer under their garments.

  1. Prayer in Harsh Conditions

Nāfiʾ (RA) narrated:

“IbnʿUmar (RA) made the call to prayer on a cold windy night. He then said: ‘Pray in your dwellings.’
Afterwards he said: ‘Whenever there was a cold or rainy night, Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) used to command the muʿadhdhin to announce: ‘Pray in your dwellings.’” (Abu Dawud)

In harsh weather, Islam permits praying at home, ensuring worship continues despite the cold.

  1. The Ease of Fasting in Winter

The Prophet (ﷺ) said:

“Fasting in winter is an easily acquired booty [i.e. reward].” (Tirmidhi)

Fasting in winter is easy and rewarding, as highlighted by the Prophet ﷺ.

Reflections on Winter Hadith

Winter is the perfect time for worship. The Prophet’s ﷺ hadith show us how we should spend it with devotion. But not everyone can enjoy this season.

There are countless families across the world facing life-threatening cold conditions.

We must help these people to make sure they too can make the most of the season.

This is where winter charity becomes essential.

Saʿīd al-Kalbī (rahimahullah) used to weep during cold nights. When he was asked about this, he said: “I thought about the poor amongst the Ummah of Muḥammad ﷺ during this night, and I cried out of compassion for them.”

Winter Charity: Fulfilling the Sunnah of Giving

Providing warm clothing, food, and shelter during the cold months is not just a noble act but a duty for us who have been blessed with more.
