Imran's story: A father's quest to put food on the table
“I have nothing, I don’t have any support. I went to the masjid and food banks looking for help, but
I can’t rely on them for support every month.”
*Trigger Warning*
Imran*, his wife and their three young children recently moved to Canada on refugee status after experiencing Islamophobic violence. The trauma caused his wife to develop severe psychological distress and attempt suicide. Her fragile health, coupled with schizophrenia and the continuation of antipsychotic medication, impacted her obligations as a parent.
Through all these difficulties, Imran worked hard to remain strong and hold his family together. But due to his wife's mental health struggles, he is restricted to working in a limited capacity as he balances household duties and taking care of the children. The bills began mounting when Imran's work permit expired and welfare income was not sufficient to put food on the table for a family of five. The growing desperation led him to contact NZF for assistance.
Through our NZF Feeds Program, Imran and his family immediately received fresh, high-quality foods, halal meat, and food vouchers. As eviction loomed over their heads, NZF also offered rental assistance.
“No one helped me the way NZF did. I can put food on the table every month because of NZF and I am always making Dua for you.”
