A Road to a Better Life – Linah’s Story

Amidst the Covid-19 pandemic, Linah and her family received their approval to enter Canada as refugees. With limited funds at their disposal, Linah, her husband and three daughters had no choice but to live in a government shelter for almost six months. There they faced harsh conditions and tried their best to get out of this tedious situation.

Despite limited English language skills, they were able to get survival jobs, which helped them to rent a small basement apartment. The down payment was too much to handle along with the first month’s rent, so they borrowed from a friend. Then came another challenge: furniture and household essential items. There simply was no way they could afford any of that.

Through personal contacts they learned of NZF and were advised to apply for support. NZF caseworker worked diligently with them to process their case, qualify them for Zakat, and came to their aid immediately. Because of the generosity of Zakat payers across the nation, Linah was provided rent support, food assistance and clothing for the kids.

However, their needs went past the scope of Zakat. To remain afloat, they needed to increase their income. Through one-on-one case management, they were successfully referred to an employment agency where Linah and her husband were able to work toward better paying jobs. With hopes for a brighter future, they were now on the road towards financial independence.

More than 10,000 refugees enter Canada each year, who are challenged in many ways and most do not have the helping hand they need to start their life in a productive manner. The continuous support of NZF donors gives families like Linah’s the tools to succeed.
